Gout is a form of arthritis that occurs when uric acid builds up in blood causing joint inflammation. It causes swelling, redness, stiffness and pain on affected joints. In many people, gout initially affects the joints of the big toe. Ankles, heels, knees, wrists, fingers and elbows can also be affected. Controlling the intake of purine-rich foods (metabolized into uric acid in the body) is important in reducing the reoccurrence of gout attack.
